The Poker Rooms Basics

April 13th, 2008

In live poker rooms, betting requires players to place their bets into the pot during every hand. The player who has the best hand then wins the entire pot. Players have the option to either check, bet, call, or fold during every hand.

A check is simply a poker bet that is equal to zero, but the player still has a claim to the pot.
A bet or raise is a larger bet than the other ones already placed. If the other players cannot bet higher than this, they give up their claim to the pot.

A call in poker also allows a player to keep his claim to the pot and is equal to the preceding bets.

A fold means that the player has given up his claim to the pot and he loses all of his previous bets and his cards.
